Colic and Anger in Newborns

It seems to be as I look at the remedies for colic in newborns that all of these remedies have a lot to do with anger.   As a society we don’t spend enough time considering the way in which babies have to be the witness to our many moods and expressions without any explanation.  It appears that colic could very well be linked to children in an enviornment in which there is some degree of anger, anxiety in the mother about anger or suppressed anger.  In some cases the baby is angry and given what newborns have to navigate in this time just to have a decent, peaceful birth it is understandable why they might begin their lives angry.

My suggestion is to simply explain to babies what is happening, why there is anger and validate their experience.   Talk to them about their birth experience from as many perspectives as you can imagine.

Homeopathic remedies are completely safe for babies and mothers who are nursing.  I have given babies remedies literally minutes after they are born – to give a baby a remedy you a couple of options:

1.  put two pellets into about 1/8 cup of water (does not need to be exact) and give the baby a teaspoon of the mixture.

2.  put two dry pellets into the baby’s mouth – I like to use Hahnemann pharmacies in California, they create poppy seed size pellets which are excellent for newborn care.

3.  put two pellets into 1/8 cup of water and dab the mixture onto the pulse points of the baby or into their armpit.

Remedies for Colic

Babies that have relief from the colic hold – i.e:  lying across and arm or across the legs of a person holding them.

• Colocynthis 200C – screaming, wanting to bend double or draw up their legs, pain is better from heat.  Usually Colocynthis pain is related to anger so if the mother has had a fit of anger or the baby has witnessed some level of anger and then begins to have a fit of colic consider this remedy.
• Magnesia Phosphorica – tissue salts – 2 pellets three times a day – this remedy is also better from pressure. Mag Phos is a remedy to be used when there is a lack of harmony between the parents.  They are  sensitive to their enviornment and react when people are fighting in their home.

Nux Vomica 200C – babies that have a colic fit after being overstimulated.  This may range from having one guest in the house to a trip to the mall.  These babies experience everything through their GI system, they are extremely sensitive to noise, light and touch.  They do best being tightly swaddled and kept in a calm, peaceful, predictable envionment.
